Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band—if he can just persuade his dad to let him quit his job at their struggling family bakery. Though he loved working there as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away over rising dough and hot ovens. But while interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easygoing guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of bread, love is ready to bloom . . . that is, if Ari doesn’t ruin everything.

Writer Kevin Panetta and artist Savanna Ganucheau concoct a delicious recipe of intricately illustrated baking scenes and blushing young love, in which the choices we make can have terrible consequences, but the people who love us can help us grow.

I Enjoyed:

  • I love Ari's family. Ari kinda drove me nuts. His family was great though.
  • The artwork in this book is absolutely beautiful. I love the blue aesthetics.

I Didn't Enjoy:

  • I felt like the characters acted a bit young. You'd think they were all in middle school. They were all mostly immature and obnoxious.
  • Ari is kind of a shit person. I didn't care for the way he treats Hector when something happens to the bakery. I really didn't care for the way he treats his family.
  • Ari's friends were super annoying in every sense. I just really hated every scene they were in.

Overall Thoughts

I personally didn't care for this story. I picked it up because one of my favorite Booktubers loved it. I'm just not a fan of this book. I should have been able to read it in one sitting and it took me like two and a half days. This story was just not for me. It was a bit childish and I'm not a fan.

I wish this book focused more on Ari and Hecor's relationship. I feel like it just skims over it.

I don't think I'm going to pick up another book by Kevin Panetta in the future...
